A system for renting pre-recorded videocassettes in which an automatic videocasette dispensing terminal (6) communicates with and becomes part of a store's computerized videocasette rental system (2). The store's computer (2) receives and compiles information relating to customer rentals from both the automatic videocasette dispensing terminal (6) and the manned point-of-sale terminals (4) in the store. The automatic videocasette dispensing terminal (6) projects through an exterior wall of the video store (11) to provide 24-hour operation. Videocasettes can be reserved and held in the terminal (6) for pick-up by the customer after hours.
