PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel antioxidant and a novel antioxidant composition. SOLUTION: From the residue of extraction of bamboo or its part at least containing 'chikujo' (a yellowish green layer between the green skin layer and the white or creamy body layer of bamboo) with a non-aqueous solvent (e.g. methylene chloride), hedyotol C (compound 1), hedyotol D (compound 2), erythrobuddlenol C (compound 3), hedyotisol A (compound 4), and hedyotisol B (compound 5) represented by the following formulas are isolated by using an aqueous solvent (e.g. acetone or ethanol); or an antioxidant composition containing at least one compound selected from among above-mentioned compounds is provided.
