PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet printer keeping a recording head clean and enhancing drawing quality. SOLUTION: The longitudinal direction of the bottom surface 52b of a recording head 52 is set so as to have a certain angle with respect to the moving direction of a recording head 52 and an escape part 75 avoiding the nozzle 52a of the recording head 52 is provided to a wiper 14. A controller selectively performs a process setting the escape part 75 of the wiper 14 at the position of the nozzle 52a and moving the wiper 14 in the longitudinal direction of the recording head to wipe off the peripheral part of the nozzle 52a and a process changing the relative position of the recording head 52 and the wiper 14 to move the upper edge part 14a of the wiper 14 to the interference position with the nozzle 52a of the recording head 52 and moving the wiper 14 in the longitudinal direction of the recording head 52 to wipe off the nozzle 52a.
