PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate a fault of no feeding of a lead due to no dropping of the lead in a lead inserting hole of a chuck caused by competing leads by a force tending to move down when a plurality of leads are contained in a lead pipe, or no feeding of the lead without further dropping the lead caused by being pushed by another lead in the pipe at a side of the lead of the part exposed with the pipe even by slightly inserting the one lead to the chuck. SOLUTION: In the mechanical pencil having a chuck disposed in front of a lead tank to grip or release a lead, the chuck is disposed movable to the tank, a protrusion part or a recess is formed at the chuck, a recess or a protrusion to be engaged with the protrusion or the recess of the chuck is formed on the tank, and the moving range of the chuck to the tank is restricted by the engagement of the protrusion or the recess of the chuck with the recess or protrusion of the tank.
