PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for an internal combustion engine capable of precisely detecting misfire. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine with plural cylinders is provided with a detection means for detecting a cam pulse signal from a cam shaft of the engine and for detecting a crank pulse signal from a crank shaft, the first calculating means for calculating a 0.5th-order frequency component of rotational fluctuation in the engine using at least one out of the cam pulse signal and the crank pulse signal, the second calculating mean for calculating fundamental frequency components of rotational fluctuation corresponding to the number of the cylinders in the engine using at least one out of the cam pulse signal and the crank pulse signal, the third calculating means for calculating a misfire constant by dividing the 0.5th-order frequency component by the fundamental frequency component, the first determination means for determining the presence of the misfire in each cycle based on the misfire constant, and the fourth calculating means for calculating a frequency of the misfire based on the presence of the misfire.
