A vehicle steering system is arranged to permit the driver's steering action to be overridden under hazardous driving conditions to assist the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle. The steering system is arranged to operate with the conventional rack and pinion steering system in which a rack (12) is disposed within a casing (14). Drive means (24) is connected to the casing to move the casing relative to the vehicle when normal steering is to be overridden. The drive means is controlled by signals from a processor (26) which in turn receives signals from sensors (28). The processor calculates the driving state of the vehicle from the sensor information to operate the drive means when necessary and cause the steerable wheels to be moved towards a corrected position. |
