PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for the production of a methacrylic acid ester free from the trouble of the precipitation of crystalline materials even after the storage over a long period without generating waste water in high yield by a simple and short step. SOLUTION: The process for the production of the methacrylic acid ester comprises the transesterification reaction of an alcohol with methyl methacrylate using lithium hydroxide and/or a lithium alkoxide as a catalyst and the treatment of the reaction product with a bivalent phenol.
