PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce sounds caused by slip between a paper feed roller and paper during deskewing action and/or initial setting action. SOLUTION: A paper feed roller is switched to high speed on detection of paper fed and presses the paper against a conveying roller to deskew the paper. During initial setting action, rotation of the conveying roller is synchronized with rotation of the paper feed roller in resetting action, and after the conveying roller is rotated in a forward direction by m1+m4 steps to feed the paper forward, only the conveying roller is rotated in the reverse direction by m5 steps to feed the paper in the reverse direction; further, the paper feed roller is rotated in the reverse direction by n2 steps and at the same time the conveying roller is rotated in the reverse direction by m2 steps; further, the paper feed roller is rotated in the forward direction for resetting action and the conveying roller is rotated in the forward direction by m3 steps to complete initial setting. Even if slip occurs during deskewing, sounds caused by the slip can be suppressed in a short time and are therefore seldom felt as noises. During initial setting, the paper is set with the paper feed roller waiting in a reset position so as to prevent slip of the paper feed roller and reduce noises.
