An image forming apparatus has a transfer medium detector contact member. The detector serves to detect the passage of a transfer medium by linear movement, swing movement, or like movement of the contact member in contact with a sheet of transfer medium separately fed. The contact member has a contact portion brought into contact with the transfer medium formed of a roller which is held rotatably and is adapted to rotated by the passage of the transfer medium.
