PURPOSE: An ignition circuit is provided to prevent breakage of an engine due to knocking by delaying ignition time. CONSTITUTION: In an ignition apparatus including a spark plug, an ion detector(180) is connected between the primary side of an ignition coil(140) and a power transistor(150), between the secondary side of the ignition coil and a spark plug(190), and an AND gate(160). The AND gate is for receiving signals from an ECU(Electronic Control Unit)(170) and the ion detector and transmitting the signals to the ECU. The ion detector applies ion currents to the spark plug and transmits a signal "1" to the AND gate when ignition occurs. The ECU outputs a normal ignition control signal with response to the output "0" of the AND gate while outputting a delay ignition control signal with response to the output "1" of the AND gate. If a signal "0" is outputted from the AND gate, the ECU decides non-occurrence of knocking and continuously outputs normal ignition control signals. If pre-ignition occurs, both the ion detector and the ECU output signals "1". Then, the AND gate outputs a signal "1", and the ECU decides the signal as a precondition of knocking. Accordingly, ignition time is delayed and knocking is avoided.
