The device enables personal monitoring of purchases by a customer in a store, and marks the labels to indicate that they have been read. Labels (200) are used carrying product identity marks (210) and a coded marking (212). The coded marking is machine readable, and may be modified in a controlled and non-reversible manner between an intact state and an altered state. A validation device (100) includes a reader (106) and a device for memorizing the information (104, 114) relating to the product identity, and a device (108, 110, 112) for altering the coded marking. The activation of the device is conditional on the coded marking being in the intact state. The processes of reading the marking, storing the identity of the product and alteration of the state of the coded marking run together and cannot be separated.
