PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coated optical fiber wherein the increase of a transmission loss is extremely small over the wide temperature range of -40 to 85 deg.C. SOLUTION: In the coated optical fiber wherein an optical fiber is housed in a protective tube, the ratio of the outside diameter (d) of the optical fiber to the inside diameter D of the protective tube is d/D<=0.5. Also, in the coated optical fiber wherein the optical fiber is housed in the protective tube, the surface hardness of the protective tube is 55 (D scale) or less.
