PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for faithfully reproducing a color tone in the case of converting a color space for monitor into a color space for printing. SOLUTION: The method reduces or prevents quantization errors to be generated in the mapping of a comparatively linear RGB color space into an extremely non-linear printer CMY color space having the same accuracy. Namely an outline or a stripe pattern to be generated in the printing of a color having a gradient by a non-linear printer can be prevented. Processing similar to 'dithering' is applied to original RGB continuous gradation data. When RGB values are dithered, values are generated in a certain range, and when these values are mapped in non-linear continuous gradation CMY values for a printer, CMY values in the certain range are generated. The average of these CMY values expresses appropriate average gradation of the inputted RGB values. The generated CMY continuous gradation values are half-toned and printed out.
