The stepless locking mechanism is incorporated in the spindle of a machine vice. One jaw is mounted on a screwed spindle and the other on the cylinder of a hydraulic ram, whose piston is mounted on the screwed spindle. The piston (3) is hollow, and accommodates a first control piston (8) with cone portion (10) widening towards the screwed spindle (4). This works in a tapering bush (13) in the cylinder (1). A second control piston (9) slides in relation to the first inside the main piston (3), and bears against the first one (8). The pressure chambers (17, 18) between the cylinder and main piston are connected to corresponding ones (18, 19) between the control and main pistons.
