PURPOSE: A Malassezia sp. microorganism isolated from the human skin and producing azelaic acid is provided, thereby azelaic acid is produced in a high yield. CONSTITUTION: The Malassezia sp. SA20 (KFCC 11252) is isolated by the steps of: inoculating M. furfur (KCCM 11894) into M2, M3, and M3 medium; incubating them at 30 deg.C and 200 rpm for 15 days; centrifuging and collecting the supernatant; adding azelaic acid extracting solvent into the supernatant and concentrating to prepare the HPLC analysis sample; determining the optimum condition for azelaic acid production by HPLC analysis; isolating 300 strains from the human skin and selecting 28 strains similar to Malassezia sp.; inoculating the 28 strains into PYMGO medium and incubating for 15 days; and selecting Malassezia sp. SA20 producing azelaic acid in higher yield by comparing the productivity of azelaic acid of 28 strains.
