Recovery of 2+C or 3+C hydrocarbons, or 3+C hydrocarbons together with S cpds., from gaseous mixts. contg. hydrocarbons and inerts, e.g. H2, N2 or CO, and possibly acid gases, e.g. CO2, H2S, COS and mercaptans, involves scrubbing with a 9-17C cpd. with 1-2 rings formed by 5 or 6C, where the rings are satd., unsatd., or partially satd. Claimed cpds. are 9-10C alkylated mononuclear rings, e.g. isomeric trimethylbenzenes or propylbenzenes; trimethylpropyl- or butyl-cyclohexane; butylcyclopentane; deca- or tetra-hydro-naphthalene or 1-methylnaphthalene; indane and indene. The cpd. may be substd. by halogen (C1). A mixt. of 2 cpds. may be used. The scrubbing medium may include toluene or xylene, pref. up to 25 wt.%, and may contain a minor amt. of a polar, organic, water-dissolving, physical solvent, esp. to remove water from the gas. Scrubbing is at -20 to 40 deg.C. The process is esp. scrubbing of 2+C or 3+C hydrocarbons from mixts. also contg. CH4 (opt in major amt.) and/or lighter components, e.g. H2, N2 or CO, and opt. CO2 and/or S cpds.
