The locking system uses spring loaded swivel cams carrying the supports of the next hoist ladder stage and pull ropes to actuate locking ropes lashed to adaptors between. As one ladder stage of the hoist extends, the cams (2) on that stage (5) swing into the plane (7) of the following stage (4). The cams are each held by following supports (8), during the transition of the reset cam against a spring into the plane (10) on control cams (11) formed from a right angle spiralled sheet. The pivot axes of these control cams (11) run parallel to the stage stringers.
