PURPOSE: A method for reprogramming an electronic control unit of a vehicle is provided to reprogram data of an electronic control unit safely and quickly, by providing a password confirmation procedure before reprogramming. CONSTITUTION: A user connects a scan tool to an electronic control unit and a data card that data for reprogramming is inputted and a personal computer to the scan tool when an electronic control unit is malfunctioned. A password of the scan tool is confirmed to check stability of data input(20) and Stability between the scan tool and the electronic control unit is checked to prevent data of the scan tool from being reprogrammed by other unauthorized scan tool(21). After stability check, whether the electronic control unit is suitable to receive the data transmitted from the scan tool for reprogramming or not is confirmed(22). If the electronic control unit is suitable to receive the data, whether the electronic control unit recognizes the data to be reprogrammed or not is confirmed(23). The user erases existing data of the electronic control unit through the personal computer or the scan tool and transmits new data through the scan tool to reprogram the data(24).
