PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly efficient vertical cavity surface-emitting laser(VCSEL) which is low in optical loss in a laser cavity. SOLUTION: A vertical cavity surface emitting laser 10 comprises two vertical distributed Bragg reflectors(DBRs) 16 and 18 and an undoped active region 14 sandwiched between the reflectors 16 and 18. This laser is characterized in that the DBRs 16 and 18 are formed without addition of any impurity and a current is laterally injected into the undoped active region 14. In a suitable example, in addition, periodic gain structures 28a, 28b, and 28c are utilized in the laser (VCSEL).
