PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a geographic information system in which display contents of a legends list are made to be the irreducible munimum by displaying only legends items discriminatingly displaying together various attributes of a map area as the legends list at the time of displaying the selected map area. SOLUTION: This geographic information system is provided with a storage part 2 having a map file 9 and a legends item file 10, a control part 1 having an information control part 6, a display control part 7 and a file management part 5, a display part 3 and an input part 4. When the control part 1 extracts selected map information and identification data expressing the map area selected by the input part 4 from the storage part 2 and the part 1 displays the extracted map information and identification data with the display part 3 together with the legends list, a legends item management table 8 with which the propriety of the display are set for every legends item is provided in the part 1 and when the map information and identification data are extracrted, the part 1 sets legends items of the legends item management table 8 discriminatingly displaying attributes with the part 3 to be displayable and displays the selected map information with the part 3 together with a legends list 15 consisting of only legends items needed for the discriminatingly displaying of the attributes.
