PURPOSE: An image search method and system is provided to extract image data characteristics by allocating areas, and compare similarities by using a shift matching so that it can definitely retrieve an image though the image is rotated or moved. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises steps of determining if an input image is the first layer, and allocating the pattern data into m lower level areas in the case that the input image is not the first layer(S1), labeling each allocated area with an identification value(S2), extracting characteristics on the pattern data of the input image in the case that the input image is the first layer(S3), calculating a similarity of an overall image in the case that the extracted characteristics is the first layer, comparing the same labeled area data of the two images, simultaneously calculating the similarity between all the possible two areas while moving the area contours by a shift matching method, and selecting the highest similarity value as a similarity value on m lower level areas(S4), storing a labeling combination of the two areas, and then rearranging the labeling for the shift matching at the next layer(S5).
