PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processor that detects a background gray level of an original from a first scanning so as to eliminate a background of an original even in character processing of an image developed in one Bk color without the need for preliminary scanning and addition of hardware such as a memory. SOLUTION: A background detection section 82 is placed after a synchronization matching memory 72 for an image area separation signal and an output of the synchronization matching memory 72 being a line memory for several tens of lines is used for image data for background detection to detect a background gray level in a large area for the execution of the background elimination.
