PURPOSE: To inhibit the great increase of a processing time for every preset crank angle position during high speed rotation, eliminate the dispersion of responsibility and enable good valve timing control. CONSTITUTION: A control device comprises a valve timing changing mechanism for changing at least one of valve timings for valves to change valve overlap amounts for inlet and exhaust valves, an actual spark advance detecting means for detecting an actual valve timing position for every preset crank angle position, a target spark advance setting means for setting a target valve timing in accordance with the operating condition of an engine, a control means for controlling the valve timing changing mechanism to change an actual spark advance to a target spark advance, a spark advance deviation computing means for computing a deviation between the target spark advance and the actual spark advance for every preset crank angle position, a differential value computing means for computing a deviation between a present value and a previous value for the spark advance deviation for every preset time and a controlled variable computing means for computing controlled valuables used in the control means in accordance with the spark advance deviation and the differential value.
