PURPOSE: A band brake stroke detecting apparatus is provided to control a kick-down band brake and improve shift quality with an electrical signal by installing a stroke sensor switch in an upper part of a kick-down piston contact position. CONSTITUTION: Hydraulic pressure of a valve body(14) is supplied to a kick-down piston through a first oil passage(40) with operating a shift solenoid valve by a speed change command of a transmission control unit(32). The kick-down piston presses a kick-down band(4) in the end of a piston rod(20) with falling, and fastens a kick-down drum. A conductive terminal(38) of the kick-down piston with a power terminal(36) is contacted to a contact point terminal(34) by resilience of a spring(18) with shutting off hydraulic pressure operating on the first oil passage through the valve body while operating the shift solenoid valve by the other command of the transmission control unit. The transmission control unit applies a periodic electrical signal and detects a stroke of the kick-down brake. The shift quality is improved by accurate control according to speed change with the transmission control unit operating the kick-down piston precisely.
