PURPOSE: A voice mail system using a caller ID function and a method for controlling the system are provided to enable the other part who left a voice message to check whether a telephone user listened to the message, when the other part makes a phone call again. CONSTITUTION: A digital telephone system(10) includes a detection part(11) for detecting a caller ID of the signal received from a telephone network(30), a main controller(12) for controlling the connection to the system(10) using the caller ID, and a digital interface(13) for transferring the control signal, output from the main controller(12), to a digital mail system(20). The digital mail system(20) includes an interface(21) for receiving the signal output from the digital telephone system(10), a control part(22) and a RAM for storing the data necessary for the control part(22). The control part(22) checks whether a user listened to the voice mail, using the caller ID applied from the interface(21), and outputs a response message according to the result of the check.
