PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an achromatic reflection type TN liquid crystal display which is bright with high contrast and suitable for the color display by a color filter method, and to provide a reflection type STN liquid crystal display having the spectral reflectance with small wavelength dependence. SOLUTION: The display has a laminated structure produced by successively laminating a reflection plate 2a having a function as a rear face electrode 3b, driving liquid crystal layers 1a, 1c consisting of a STN liquid crystal or TN liquid crystal, a front side transparent electrode layer 3 produced by forming a front side transparent electrode 3a on the rear side of a transparent substrate 4, a compensation plate 10 containing compensation liquid crystal layers 1b, 1d consisting of the same liquid crystal as that of the driving liquid crystal layers 1a, 1c, a 1/4 wavelength plate 9 and a polarizing plate 7. Black display is obtained when a voltage on the driving liquid crystal layers 1a, 1c is turned off. |
