The device for lateral alignment of sheets of paper has an aligning device which rotates about an axis at right angles to the path of the sheets and is positioned below them. The aligning device consists of a suction disk surrounded by an aligning disk. The outer contour of the aligning disk is made up of a third section (15.3) which fits against the sheet, a first section (15.1) which moves the disk into contact with the sheet and a second section (15.2). The suction disk has a third section (7.3) with no suction holes and a first (7.1) and second (7.2) section with holes. The first section of the suction disk corresponds to the first section of the aligning disk, and so on.
