Weft yarn (2) or weft tape is fed intermittently by taking it past a continuously rotating roll (4) without wrapping it round it and gripping it in time with the loom action with a nip arrangement (5). The nip can be formed by a roll (6), a pair of rolls or an apron. The nip actuator (11) can be electro-pneumatically, electro-mechanically, or hydraulically operated.
