The present invention describes a novel subunit of voltage-gated sodium channels. This subunit is a splice variant of the beta subunit of sodium channels that encodes a novel protein. Methods and compositions for using these nucleic acids and proteins of this subunit are described. The invention further discloses methods for the treatment of neuropathic pain.
