A sensor (26) monitors the revolutions of either the take-up reel (10) or the drive pinion (22). In the guide roller (17) are embedded magnetic markers (24) monitored by a sensor (25). From the sensor signals a processor derives the ratio of the revolutions of reel and pinion. Stored in the processor is the value of the ratio which represents the maximum winding radius the reel can accommodate. If the measured ration reaches this value the drive is switched off
