The fuel injection device has a valve body (6) fitted into a bore in the engine, containing a piston valve element (25), displaced axially against a closure spring (23), within a valve bore (19), by the pressure of the fuel supplied from a high pressure space (5). The fuel feed is regulated via a control valve (8) having a control valve element enclosed by 2 annular spaces (11,28) respectively coupled to the high pressure space and the fuel feed channel (20). The valve body has a hydraulic stroke limiting stop (45), for adjustment of the stroke in dependence on the fuel pressure.
