Current transmission systems transmit useful data and OAM data in IP packets which are linked into frames. According to the prior art, the useful data and the OAM data are distinguished in the frame head by means of a special marking which is subsequently converted into an absolute length. However this involves greater expense in terms of hardware. The invention therefor provides that the length of the useful data and OAM data being transmitted is entered directly. If this exceeds 19 bits, the data that follow are to be interpreted as useful data. Otherwise, they should be interpreted as OAM data.
