Polynucleotide probes and accessory helper oligonucleotides useful for detecting bacteria that are members of the genus <i>Staphylococcus</i>. The hybridization probes are highly specific for Staphylococcal bacteria and do not cross-hybridize with the rRNAs of numerous other bacterial and fungal species.
