Procedure for starting internal combustion engine entails using electric machine to move crankshaft to unstable angular position before start process commences

Before starting the engine(1) the crankshaft(4) is purposefully moved by an electric machine(8) to a start initial angular position from which begins the starting process. The start initial angular position is an unstable angular position of the crankshaft. The crankshaft is moved to the initial start position in the direction opposite the start process. The crankshaft, with stopping of the engine, is braked in such a way that the crankshaft comes to stop in the start initial angular position. An Independent claim is included for a device for starting an internal combustion engine including an electric machine operated as a starter-generator unit connected to the crankshaft.
