A spatial optical modulating device comprising an electric address type element that is addressed by a writing information-related electrical signal, contains pixel-structured image display unit and receives writing light, and a thin-film material unit having an optical address layer and an optical modulation layer sequentially laminated between a pair of substrates, and further having an optical address type spatial optical modulator to which a reading light is projected, wherein a compensation layer with a preset width is provided between the image display and the thin-film material unit.
