PURPOSE: A film remaining amount detecting device is provided to detect a remaining amount of a print film in a heat transfer printer with using a common heat transfer film, and to indicate the film remaining amount precisely. CONSTITUTION: Information on a film remaining amount is stored according to drive steps of a step motor. The number of the step is operated according to drive of the step motor. The calculated drive step number of the step motor is checked while receiving a detection signal in a cycle applied from a print unit. The information on the film remaining amount is detected on the basis of the drive step number, and is displayed through a display unit. The film remaining amount is detected from a heat transfer printer continuously with using a common heat transfer film in simple structure. The printing trouble by film shortage is prevented with displaying the film remaining amount information.
