A gas burner and a method of its use

There is disclosed a gas burner (10) that generates an elongate flame the combustion zone (20) of which is parallel sided. The burner (10) is suitable for branding food products of varying heights without contact, and it consumes significantly less energy than the known, contact elements. The flame profile is maintained by orifices (13) for a combustion vitiating gas disposed to either side of an orifice for a combustible gas. The resulting zones (22) of combustion vitiating as define a parallel sided valley in which combustion occurs. The disclosure also relates to methods of marking food products with brand marks.
