A gastric drainage device comprises a nasal gastric tube 2, a container 3 for collecting the expelled gastric fluids and a hand-operated pump 4 interposed between the nasal gastric tube 2 and the container 3, for dispelling fluids from the tube 2 into the container 3. The pump 4 is preferably in-line between the nasal gastric tube 2 and the container 3 with the tube 2 preferably having a number of openings 2a along its length at the patient end which allows the ingress of fluids from the stomach. Both the tube 2 and the container 3 are preferably made form a transparent plastics material such as PVC with the container taking the form of a flexible bag. The pump 4 is preferably a vacuum pump and comprises a flexible, resilient cylindrical barrel which as an inlet and an outlet each of which is provided with a non-return valve. The container 3 may also include a evacuation channel 19 in order to vent stomach gases and a Y-connector 10 may also be included in the set-up to allow irrigation fluid such as saline to be introduced. |
