There is disclosed a method of maintaining an infra-red data link between first and second terminals, wherein establishment of the infra-red data link is indicated by the first terminal sending a request signal, and responsive thereto receiving an acknowledgement signal from the second terminal within a predetermined time period, wherein the first terminal has a low-power mode in which it is active for a fixed time period within a fixed time interval, wherein in said fixed time period the first terminal sends the request signal.
