A composite material having carbon fibres in a metal matrix is characterised in that the fibres comprise vapour-phase epitaxial carbon fibres with a ramified feather-like structure. The metal may be aluminium or an aluminium alloy and the material has high thermal conductivity and low weight. It may be used as heat sink. The material is made by dispersing the fibres in a solvent, removing the solvent to form a fibre layer, placing the fibre layer in a pressure container overlaid by a filter and a layer of metal, applying vacuum and heating to cause the metal to melt and impregnate the underlying fibres. Conventional epitaxial vapour-phase carbon fibres may be used in addition to the feather-like ones. |
