Producing a virtual contrast agent for extended angioscopy of blood vessels involves acquisition of data for production and subsequent segmentation of a three-dimensional computer generated model of the blood vessels under investigation. A second process image is obtainable without further application of the contrast agent from the first process image requiring (for its production) introduction of the contrast agent into the blood vessels.
