PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tape printer for printing characters, and the like, cleanly. SOLUTION: Based on the ON/OFF signal of each tape decision sensor S1-S7, 'type of tape' and 'tape width' of each loaded tape cassette 21, 45 are identified (S1). A 'print period' is then selected from the data of the 'type of tape' and 'tape width' and printed as the printable time of 1 dot print of each recording element in a thermal head 11 to make a character tape 35 (S3, S4). A discrimination is then made between 'normal print mode' and 'continuous print mode' and 'number of dot' is selected from the data of 'type of tape', 'tape width' and 'specification of margin' stored at RAM 54 and a tape feed motor 30 is driven by an amount corresponding to the 'number of dot' (S5-S9).
