Sulphonamide-containing hydroxyethylamine compounds represented by formula (I) where R, R?1, R2, R3, R4, R6, R20, R21¿, Y, t and x are as defined in claim 1, are effective as retroviral protease inhibitors, and in particular as inhibitors of HIV protease.
