PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a damper for eliminating or reducing swish noise related to a conventional damper in a compression and extension stroke. SOLUTION: A noise preventive mechanism of a damper reduces swish noise heard at moving time of a piston assembly 24 in the damper 10. The damper includes a pressure cylinder for forming a work chamber having a first part and a second part operable for storing a damping fluid. A piston rod is arranged in the pressure cylinder, and a piston body 40 is fixed in the piston rod. First/ second annular axially extending lands 68, 72 extend from the piston body, and these lands are concentric with the piston body. A set of axially extending flow ports arranged at intervals in the circumferential direction are formed in the piston body between the first/second annular axially extending lands. Adjacent to the flow ports is the noise preventive mechanism 88 for reducing 'swish' noise when the piston body moves in the pressure cylinder.
