PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aliphatic polyester, by which the aliphatic polyester having a high mol.wt. can be produced at a low installation cost and in a short time, namely profitably, and further in a state low in coloration having been generated on the production of biodegradable aliphatic polyesters. SOLUTION: This method for producing a biodegradable aliphatic polyester comprises the dehydrative polycondensation reaction of an aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acid or its oligomer, or a dihydric aliphatic alcohol and a dibasic aliphatic carboxylic acid, further or an oligomer obtained from a dihydric aliphatic alcohol and a dibasic aliphatic carboxylic acid in the presence of a silver-based catalyst and an acidic catalyst in which the logarithmic value of the inverse number of the acid dissociation constant is <=3.66.
