METHOD OF PRODUCING trans-4-(4'-OXOCYCLOHEXYL) CYCLOHEXANOLS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of efficiently and simply producing high-purity trans-4-(4'-oxocyclohexyl)cyclohexanols useful as a raw material for liquid crystal compounds. SOLUTION: trans-4-(4'-Hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexanols represented by formula (I) [X is a single bond, CH2 or C(CH3)2] are hydrogenated in the presence of a palladium-based catalyst in an organic solvent to thereby produce trans-4-(4'- oxocyclohexyl)cyclohexanols represented by formula (II) [X is the single bond, CH2 or C(CH3)2]. An alkali metal-containing palladium catalyst is used as the palladium-based catalyst.
