PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition which can form ferroelectric liquid crystal elements having large response speeds, the low temperature dependency of the response speeds and high contrasts or antiferroelectric liquid crystal elements having excellent uniform orientability. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal element uses a liquid crystal composition containing 1 to 80 wt.% of an optically active compound represented by optically active 3-(4-phenylbutoxy) 6-(4'-decyl-4-biphenylcarbonyloxy)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2- naphthalenecarboxylate.
