PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting generation of detonation in an internal combustion engine without using an expensive pressure sensor for detecting pressure in a cylinder. SOLUTION: A section between at a top dead center and at 45 deg. after the top dead center of an engine is defined as a determination sectionθx. A peak positionθpn of angular acceleration dω/dt of a crank shaft generated in the determination section when the engine normally combusts is obtained in advance as a determination reference position. The peak position of the angular acceleration generated in the above determination section is detected as a peak positionθpx for determination. When the peak positionθpx for determination is advanced in relation to the determination reference positionθpn, it is determined that detonation is generated.
