PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To work diffraction gratings of high shape accuracy in a short time. SOLUTION: A work 19 having a number of diffraction gratings 31, 32, 33... having a brazed section is subjected to milling process using a cutter 22 attached to a machine tool having five-axial degree of freedom. The central grating 31 has a minimum inclination angleα1 with the maximum pitch P while the end grating has a maximum inclination angle with the minimum pitch. The tip angleθof the cutter 22 should range from (90-αmin) deg. to (90-αmax) deg., whereαmin is the minimum inclination angle, andαmax is the maximum inclination angle. The work 19 and cutter 22 are put in relative drive while the ridges 24b of the cutter 22 are positioned mating with the slopes 31b, 32b, 33b... of the gratings 31, 32, 33..., and at the same time, the cutter 22 is rotated at a high speed.
