PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To change air/fuel ratio control if the malfunction of a linear air/fuel ratio sensor is diagnosed. SOLUTION: A signal corresponding to the reference concentration of oxygen in a linear air/fuel ratio sensor is diagnosed, and if it is out of a regular value, the operating condition of the linear air/fuel ratio sensor is changed for air/fuel ratio control. Since the air/fuel ratio control can be kept if the linear air/fuel ratio sensor is in failure, the decrease of an exhaust gas level is prevented.
